Each recipient of the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award, has left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds, embodying the true spirit of valour.
1. Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari (Posthumous)
Among the honoured was Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari of the 1 Sikkim Scouts, who gave his life in a heroic attempt to save a fellow soldier from the treacherous waters of the Nimuphuichhu River in North Sikkim. In a moment that showcased his unwavering resolve, Lt. Tiwari leapt into the raging river, pushing his subordinate to safety despite suffering injuries himself. His bravery ultimately cost him his life, a sacrifice that resonates deeply with all of us. He remains a shining example of selfless service and devotion to duty.
3. Captain Lalrinawma Sailo
The valour displayed by Captain Lalrinawma Sailo of the 4 Para (Special Forces) during a counter-terrorism operation in the dense forests of Srinagar is nothing short of remarkable. After an arduous 15-hour trek, Capt. Sailo and his team located a terrorist hideout. Facing gunfire, he showed exceptional tactical brilliance and immense courage by engaging with three terrorists at close range, successfully neutralising the threat. His actions not only saved lives but also reinforced the importance of bravery in the face of danger.
4. Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundaram A
The day also celebrated Lance Naik Meenatchi Sundaram A of the 34 Rashtriya Rifles, who demonstrated extraordinary resilience during an intense firefight in Kulgam. Despite sustaining grievous gunshot wounds to his face and shoulder, LNk Sundaram showcased sheer raw courage and exceptional marksmanship, intercepting and neutralising a terrorist in close quarters. His determination to continue fighting despite severe injuries exemplifies the spirit of our armed forces.
