As we approach the official retirement of the MiG-21 from the Indian Air Force on 26 September 2025, it’s hard not to reflect on the incredible journey of this jet that has defined the skies for over six decades. Since its induction in 1961, the MiG-21 has been more than just a fighter aircraft; it has been a symbol of courage, resilience, and evolution in Indian aviation history.
4. Modern-Day Heroics
The MiG-21’s legacy extended into the 21st century, with the most notable recent engagement involving Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman in 2019 during the Balakot strikes. His dogfight against an F-16, which resulted in successfully downing an enemy aircraft, epitomised the continuing prowess of the MiG-21, even in the modern jet age.
Despite its storied history, the MiG-21’s journey was not without its challenges. The aircraft faced a notably high accident rate, with over 350 crashes attributed to various factors, including ageing airframes and pilot safety concerns. Nonetheless, the aircraft has remained a legendary workhorse, emblematic of the sacrifices made by countless brave pilots.
6. A Tribute to the MiG-21
As we bid farewell to the MiG-21, we celebrate its legacy of courage, sacrifice, and the transformation it catalysed within the Indian Air Force. The future of air combat may rest with next-generation platforms, but the MiG-21 will forever hold its place in aviation history as a symbol of indomitable spirit and prowess.
